Guitar Hero III squeezes out version for BlackBerry

Poor Bessy, the Guitar Hero cow is getting her teats squeezed raw by Activision. Hands-On Mobile announced another addition to the GH III oeuvre as the "number one selling" mobile version of Guitar Hero III became available for BlackBerry smartphones. Come on Bessy, just keep squirting.

According to Hands-On the mobile version of Guitar Hero III has achieved 7.5 million song downloads in less than six months and will be available on the nation's top four mobile carriers by April. Oh well, more power to 'em. Observing someone play GH III on a phone can't possibly be more awkward than it'll be watching someone play the DS version of GH III on the subway in the morning.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Learn the Basics of Sewing with an Illustrated Guide [Instruction]

Have you thought about tackling some of the niftier crafts projects we've posted at Lifehacker, but the thought of picking up a needle and thread brings phantom stabbing pains to your fingers? Instructables posts a pretty handy guide to the basics of putting thread through a needle and working with it, including a guide to what kind of equipment you'll need and an explanation of the most common terms used in how-to guides. It goes a little beyond the scope of, say, sewing a button back on, but it could help you down the path toward paint chip wallets, T-shirt laptop cases, and other DIY goodies. Hit the link to get your thread on.

Ian Rogers Leaves Yahoo To Start His Own Gig

Ian Rogers, Yahoo’s vice president of video and music applications, has left the company to launch a startup of his own, according to a post on his personal blog. Ian has joined forces with Peter Gotcher and Shamal Ranasinghe to launch the new company which is unsurprisingly music related, and is called Topspin Media.

The company is in stealth mode at the moment, and not much is known about it; what we do know, however, is that it’s going to be a new digital music distribution model for indie artists.

In his blog post, Ian dropped an interesting bit of info on us. While still at Yahoo, he was apparently working on an “insanely cool stealth product” which was also his “primary music listening vehicle.” I haven’t been too impressed with Yahoo’s music efforts so far, but maybe they surprise me with this one - if it ever goes live.

Whiskerino 2007 Approaches

The next Whiskerino is roughly 2 months away. I had grand plans to have the site in development starting in February and that didn't pan out.. at all. So, here I am with 2 months to design, build and test a site that I am very excited to launch. The last Whiskerino was mind blowing in terms of participation and I can only imagine that this year will top that (maybe even TOO much participation is on the horizon).

So really, I'm asking for help. I need to know what everyone thinks the site was lacking last time? What would make it better this time around? Or just insight into handling a site of this possible magnitude. Please keep the following in mind:

· Possibly looking at 150 - 300 participants
· Would like to give "equal" face time to anyone involved. Letting veterans rule the site doesn't leave room for great new comers.
· Want things to work smoothly and quickly - spending 6 hours on the site should be optional, not mandatory for your daily participation.

Obviously I'll do my best to deploy some smart URL's, use some Ajax for a few things and try to integrate the Chat / Quick commenting features of Moustache May but I want to take all the flaws of the previous sites and do away with them (making way for new flaws). So, please, help me out here and let me know what would make for a great site.

Biggest Facebook App Acquisition Yet: TripAdvisor Reportedly Acquires Where I’ve Been for $3 Million (Update: TripAdvisor deni

Update: TripAdvisor’s Brian Payea has responded: “This is untrue. Beyond that, we do not have any comment.” Payea would not specifically comment on whether acquisition hasn’t happened or simply that the reported price was inaccurate. Take it for what you will…but for now, though this is not a ridiculous price given the canvas page views and CPMs I would expect Where I’ve Been to be generating, it seems like the first big Facebook app acquisition is still yet to happen.

Just two months after asking, “I Have 250,000 Users, Now What?”, Craig Ulliott has an answer.

In what is by far the largest Facebook application acquisition to date, travel company TripAdvisor has reportedly acquired Where I’ve Been from Craig Ulliott for $3 million.

The acquisition marks the first major successful exit of a Facebook application since the Platform launched just under three months ago.

With 2.3 million users, Where I’ve Been established itself as by far the biggest travel application on Facebook, leading #2 Cities I’ve Visited (also TripAdvisor owned) by over 1 million users.

The $3 million price tag values Where I’ve Been users at about $1.30, or almost 30 times the 4.6 cents per user Slide paid for Favorite Peeps two months ago.

If confirmed, this acquisition marks a major step toward validating the value rapidly being created by Facebook platform developers. Many have questioned the liquidity of the Facebook application market beyond the $60k range that Slide paid to acquire Favorite Peeps.

“This means Facebook is a real platform,” said Naval Ravikant, founder of Hitforge, an investor in the Facebook platform.

“I do think he sold too early, but $3M is a great return for the amount of time he invested.”

Certainly! For a developer once unable to afford a server to handle his bustling app traffic, a $3M sale is sure to inspire additional development and investment in the Platform. Congratulations to Craig for hanging on and leading Where I’ve Been to a successful exit!

The Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years is a great compilation of compelling photography, inventive graphic design and, mostly, societal commentary. Personally I think #31 was a huge mistake to be included as "top 40" but they can't all be winners can they?

Me.dium is like being given a piggyback by someone surfing the web.
The interface sits as a sidebar on your Firefox browser (a version
for Microsoft Explorer will soon be released) and at the top of the
window, you can see which sites other Me.dium users are currently
looking at. If anything takes your interest, like
Frogger you can
leap from your surfing session to theirs, and follow them as they
explore the web. Don't worry though, no-one can follow you to
sensitive sites such as online banking or email.

We found it really gratifying as we navigated to Cool Hunting and
about four users swiftly followed us. On the flipside, we linked up
with someone who was looking at some good stuff on YouTube. With a

widget you can add to your site that shows visitors what you're
looking at, Me.dium takes the surfing experience to the next level,
making it less hidden and more open—but only if you want it to be.
Web 2.1 anybody?
